Inspiring Designer_Nicholas Womeldorff

Nicholas Womeldorff, a UC graduate, has some very inspiring work on Coroflot. He lays out his sketches and renderings very cohesively on the page in order to tell the story of the design. A very effective tool he uses is heirarchy of images and sketches. Rather than having one "money shot" he has several supporting renderings to display the product. He seems to take a marketing approach to his product pages (few or no inspiration and sketch pages) and it is very effective.

Portfolio

After making the big leap into InDesign, I give you my most current portfolio. The most significant update is the use of a grid...consistently!...throughout my portfolio. I also simplified the storytelling by use of a book layout and my photography. Please comment! This is one project that seems to be never ending!

Storytelling

slide:ology admits that storyboarding can be intimidating. One of the mistakes made when drawing people in storyboards, is to start with the head...I am guilty of this. Slide:ology recommends to start with the body because "it allows you to capture the essence of the gesture you want to convey."

Dave Seah discusses the difference between a specialist designer and a storytelling designer. Regarding the storytelling designer, he expresses that "the primary goal is not to produce to a functional spec, but to create a story about the client [or product], with the client in the hero-protagonist role."

In the book Designing for Interaction, Dan Saffer does not recommend that generic or stock images are used in storyboards because "they will come off as stilted and likely won't be specific enough to match the scenario."

Personal Goals_Winter Quarter

Let's see...
I would really like to build upon my sketch rendering skills. I often go from chicken scratch sketches to CAD modeling. It is imperative that I take advantage of ID studio, DesCom, and Human Factors this quarter and use each class to benefit the other.
